Abstract

Summary. The article examines the peculiarities of military-patriotic education of high school students in the USA education system. It is emphasised that the US education system emphasises that patriotism is not only love for one’s country, it also means love and respect for one’s fellow citizens. And the military-patriotic education of high school students as citizens is a common mission that concerns the activities of schools not only in the United States but also in Ukraine. The article identifies interesting and effective, in our opinion, forms of military-patriotic education of high school students in the USA education system. Among the promising areas of application of the American experience in the educational system of Ukraine are the following: the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC), which was established in 1916 and is still functioning effectively today. The Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) operates in both public and private educational institutions; the Military Order’s programme, which focuses on the education, development and recognition of young people. This programme of military-patriotic education consists of the following elements: a youth leadership conference (Youth Leadership: Patriotic and Civic Education); an essay contest; youth leadership workshops; colour painting; and military-patriotic education in USA public schools. The article describes the experience of the American Heritage Charter School, which is located in rural Bonneville County. This school offers free, rigorous and patriotic education. The mission of the school is to educate patriotic and educated leaders in accordance with James Madison’s statement “The development and dissemination of knowledge is the only guarantee of true liberty”; Military School USA. Military schools provide comprehensive education (mind, body and spirit). Military and patriotic education in the United States is much more than physical exercises and marches. Students educated in military schools often become successful, independent thinkers, leaders and excellent strategists.
