We learn to listen to sounds and words, perceive the flow of information with our ears, reproduce it by speaking, and then develop reading and writing skills. Thus, listening is the critical and first link in the language learning process. Listening is both an objective and a means of learning. The purpose of this article is to show and analyze modern methods of using listening, in this case − authentic songs, as one of the most important factors in the development of communication skills of students of non-language specialties. During the study of such form of listening as authentic songs, I used such methods as: the descriptive method, the method of analysis and synthesis. Listening provides an opportunity to expand the active lexical structure of a foreign language and its grammatical features. Obviously, listening, as a type of speech activity, plays an important role in the realization of educational and upbringing tasks, is an effective means of teaching a foreign language in higher education institution. There are two most important types of listening: communicative listening and educational listening. Educational listening is considered as a means of learning, is a way of introducing new lexical material, creating auditory images of language units, forms the basis for mastering oral speech and improvement in communication skills. Thus, we can conclude that teaching listening is a very interesting, educational and cognitive process, in the case of correct student motivation. Listening is the basis of communication, and from this begins the mastery of oral communication. The task of the teacher is to keep up with the times, to make routine classes more interesting. Mastering this skill ensures the success of communication, consisting in the ability to speak and understand English. The use of listening in foreign language classes at non-special faculties helps to make study more interesting for students, to consolidate their skills and abilities and helps to train auditory memory.
