PEDAGOGICAL VIEWS OF O. MAKARUSHKA ON PATRIOTIC EDUCATION IN THE CONTEXT OF MODERN CHALLENGES

The article analyzes the views of the Ukrainian pedagogue O. Makarushka (1867–1931) on the patriotic education of Ukrainian youth. He viewed patriotism as a multifaceted phenomenon that encompasses not only love for the homeland but also a deep knowledge of history, active promotion of the native language, and an awareness of cultural heritage. Patriotic education should permeate the entire educational process, not be limited to teaching a separate subject. The pedagogue believed that every subject provides an opportunity to familiarize children with their native land and people, and even mathematical and geometric exercises can be used for patriotic education. He paid particular attention to artistic subjects such as singing, physical exercises, drawing, and handwork, which, in his opinion, were filled with an inexhaustible wealth of Ukrainian patterns and motifs. The fundamental values of national-patriotic education are analyzed. The patriotic feelings instilled in young people shape the character, worldview, and behavior of the individual, and the future of Ukraine depends on the youth who deeply understand the national idea and are ready to actively participate in the development of the state. Special emphasis is placed on the role of historical examples and personal role models in shaping the patriotic consciousness of young people. It is proven that studying history is an important tool for fostering patriotic feelings, and using the life stories of outstanding individuals is an effective method of cultivating moral qualities. Studying the national cultural heritage is a necessary condition for the integration of Ukrainian youth into the global cultural space. Attention is drawn to the significance of folk and Shevchenko holidays as forms of patriotic education in the school environment. Recommendations are offered on the use of O. Makarushka’s pedagogical ideas in the patriotic education of youth in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
